This can be a bit tricky. If this is a trip you have planned for quite a while book early. Most fares have a 45, 21, or 14 day advanced purchase so the further out you book the better. However, if you are willing to wait the airlines will offer specials on unsold inventory closer to the time of departure. Most airlines now offer email alerts for specials to cities you register to visit within two weeks of departure. Sites like travelzoo.com send out weekly specials that can be useful as well. All of this depends on the city you live in and where you want to go. If you live in a city that is dominated by one of the big legacy carriers the higher the fares. If your city has discount airlines like southwest of jet blue you may get better rates. Be advised that Southwest does not offer their best fares on secondary sites. You will have to go to their site for the best fare. the legacy carriers are also doing this. Bottom line is go to the carriers that serve your city and sign up for email alerts of specials to cities you may want to visit.
