Yes, you can generally change it but it may be very expensive. The policies and cost varies by airline so there is no single answer to your question.

The following assumes that you are in the U.S. and that you’re looking for the cheapest possible fare. More expensive fares will have fewer fees and restrictions. The most expensive tickets won’t have any.

In general, you can expect to pay a change fee which is typically around $200 per ticket. Your new dates will also have to conform to any minimum stay or other restrictions on your fare. If the fare is higher for your new dates, you will also have to pay the fare increase.

Your best bet is to hold off buying your tickets until your dates are firm. Once you have decided which airline to fly, the airline or your travel agent can tell you the exact fees and restrictions.

If you purchase a ticket that is refundable and changeable then you will have no problems. This fare is higher than the standard fare. If not you may be able to change your dates of flying by paying a change fee which could range from $50 to $75 depending on the airline. Also, if the class of service you purchase is sold out (there are 3 – 4 classes of service in coach, then business fare and and first class) you may have to pay the difference between what you paid and the class of service that is available on the day you want to fly.

You can change your date of travel as far out as you may want to, as long as there is space on the flight that you want to take.
