Like stated above, the earlier the better. You can try places like Yahoo! Travel. Look for the flight and it can give you an idea of how expensive and how cheap the tickets will be. What I like about that is that it gives you comparisons of different travel sites so you can get the best deal. Also, if you're traveling abroad, it depends on what time of year. Their summer-time is usually busier, and weekends are busier just in general. Try booking your flight for a Tuesday instead of a Friday, and if traveling abroad, go in the off-season. If you are a student you can also find special sites that will give you a discounted price. STA travel is where I get my tickets. :) But to recap, there's not really a specific month in which to book an airline ticket, it all depends on your destination and which time of year is the busiest for them. That might take a little research about your destination, but a couple hundred dollars saved is well worth it in my opinion. :)

Things used to work like that but you can not use a time or date to rate prices anymore because alot of airlines are using smaller planes to fly because of the decline in sales. so for example when they usually would use a large plane (747) to go from Baltimore to LA now they are using a regional jet (smaller plane) so they do not loose money on fuel and this way they can use the supply and demand stratagy because if there are less seats on the plane they can keep charging the same price or even more. in october and in march i flew from Baltimore and Washington DC to Lima, Peru and i was amazed while flying on 2 separate airlines (Delta & Continental Airlines) they both used regional jets for an international flight (an international flight usually carries more than 300 people a reagional jet depending on the saize may carry 150 people). At the moment the only thing that will help you, if you have this option is to check multiple airports to depart and arrive at or to open a credit card use it to pay for the ticket then pay it off and close it.. i live in Baltimore, Maryland so i check Philadelphia, Baltimore and the 2 airports in Washington dc. Then i choose the cheapest fare because i am with in 1 hour of all 4 airports.

good luck i hope i was of some help
